The story of the Rwandan peace basket is one of triumph over tragedy. One hundred days in 1994 became known as the Rwandan genocide. Officially known as the genocide against the Tutsi, an estimated 70 percent of the Tutsi population in Rwanda was killed during a few short months. While the stories of loss and tragedy are innumerable, the real story is told through the people, the landscape, the children, and mostly, the future. Communities of people joining together in traditional basket weaving cultivated healing and harmony. Gifting the baskets to others continued the united pledge to establish peace. Love and nurturing pulsed through the streets of Rwanda. As women gathered together building pieces of art, they left behind healing, hope, strength, and honor.
In the same beautiful countryside that once rang the sound of destruction, the sound of laughter and love echoes off the beautiful, joy-filled faces of the Rwandan people choosing each day to build peace.
Through the Rwandan Peace Basket project, over 2,000 women were provided work and paid a fair wage for each basket made exclusively for doTERRA. To further community impact, an adult literacy program was established to provide an opportunity for those who were unable to attend school. Through this program, dreams become reality as men and women are finally able to write their names, read employment applications, open and use bank accounts, and teach generations to come how to do the same.
Thank you for choosing the Gift of Peace this holiday season. We hope you may feel your continuous role in supporting the 2,000 artisans as you share the Gift of Peace with those you love.

Battling The Blues

Anyone who survives the Montana winters knows how long and dreary they can be. With Winter just around the corner, I felt that it was appropriate to share a few of my favorite essential oils that I use when I fell down in the dumps.

Wild Orange: Most citrus oils have an uplifting aroma, but this one is sepecially invigorating.

Citrus Bliss: this blend of citrus oils and vanilla smells a lot like an orange dream sicle. This is the most summery smell to me. It reminds me of sweet summer days that are much longed for during the most miserable winter months.

Elevation: Strong aroma that uplifts and energizes

Jasmine: can promote feelings of confidence and attractiveness

Lime: fresh and uplifting. Great in summer drinks and stir fry

Peppermint: I like to combine peppermint and orange in the diffuser on days that i feel sluggish. the combination makes me feel invigorated and motivated.

Home Remedies to Remember

Make Your Own Aromatherapy Remedies

Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Recipes and Formulas

Generally, two drops of Essential Oil should be used per tsp of Carrier Oil (but follow individual recipes if available) and it takes about one to two ounces of carrier oil for a full body massage.  Any natural carrier oil except mineral oil is fine to use when preparing a massage blend.  There are lots to choose from and each has its own properties.  For most applications, we prefer our own Massage Base, which is a combination of Sweet Almond, Grapeseed and Jojoba carrier oils.

Let Freedom Ring!!

If you are like me you are probably a little disgruntled about the political state of our country. I know I cannot wait for this voting year to be over. Regaurdless, Independence day is about celebrating the freedoms of our country with our friends and family. And hey let's be honest, it's really about the fireworks!! Just don't blow up your hand throwing fire crackers into the neighbor's pond. Whether you
are out in the forest, or laying on a denim quilt watching the stars from the fairgrounds, you might want to bring a few oils along.

Some Good Essential Oils for the Summer

  • Insect repellent – several essential oils can be considered all purpose insect repellents such as citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), cedar (Cedrus atlantica), lemon eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) and patchouli (Pogosterum cablin). Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata or Syzygium aromaticum) is also effective, but it can cause skin irritation. It’s worth noting that not all insects are repelled by the same substance so it’s wise to modify the repellent blend in accordance with the relevant insect population. For example, catnip (Nepeta cataria) is particularly effective at repealing mosquitos while juniper (Juniperus communis) works on tics and fleas.
  • Insect bites – cajeput (Melaleuca cajeputi), everlasting (helichrysum italicum), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), melissa (Melissa offinicalis), patchouli, tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). Everlasting, geranium, lavender and patchouli also facilitate bite or wound healing.
  • Bee and wasp stings – Calendula (Calendula officinalis) and lavender. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is said to be particularly effective on wasp stings. Like clove (mentioned above), cinnamon can cause skin irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin.
  • Overexposure and sunburn – Australian blue cypress (Callitris intratropica), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), everlasting (Helichrysum italicum), lavender, Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). Sunburns imply skin damage, and overexposure without burning is still tough on the skin. For skin healing and rejuvenation, try calendula, carrot seed (Daucus carrota), cistus (Cistus ladanifer), lavender, everlasting or frankincense (Boswellia cateri).
  • Overheating – clary sage (Salvia sclarea), peppermint (Mentha piperita) and spearmint (Mentha spicata).
  • Allergy symptoms – Sometimes hay fever and allergies are symptoms of, or exacerbated by, congestion in the liver and lymph. So, essential oils that detoxify or clear the liver can be very beneficial. These include cypress, helichrysum B., juniper, lemon and orange. Hay fever and allergies are typically accompanied by headaches, nasal congestion and mental fogginess so oils listed under these conditions can also provide relief.
  • Nasal congestion and stuffiness – Allergies typically come with congestion and sinus inflammation. Some essential oils that act as antihistamine, clear decongestion and calm include: cypress, pepprmint eucalyptus (Eucalyptus dives), hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), helichrysum B. (Helichrysum bracteiferum), pinon pine (Pinus edilus), ravintsava (Cinnamomum camphora), rosemary and Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris).
  • Tiredness – basil (Ocimum basilicum), black pepper (Piper nigrum), peppermint (Mentha piperita) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis).
  • Hangover – fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), ginger (Zingiber officinale), juniper, peppermint and rosemary for the various hangover symptoms: headache, nausea, upset stomach, mental fogginess, impaired balance, etc.

Blue Tansy, Roman Chamomile and the Blue Oils

The Blue Oils
One thing that boggled my mind recently was the difference between blue tansy and tansy. It was apparent to me that they were not at all the same plant. Once I started researching it, I learned that it gets even more confusing. Blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) is also often referred to as blue Moroccan chamomile. But Moroccan chamomile (Ormenis multicaulis) is something totally different than blue Moroccan chamomile. Blue tansy is an herb that produces blue oil. Some of the other oils that are blue include German chamomile (Matricaria recutica), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), and yarrow(Achillea millefolium). All of these oils are closely related as they are from the Asteraceae plant family.

So why blue tansy? It is in some of the blends we love such as Deep Blue (soothing blend) and Balance (grounding blend). We use Deep Blue for bruising, sore muscles, arthritis, headaches, inflammation and fibromyalgia so it only makes sense that it includes blue tansy that aides in rheumatism, inflammation, sciatica, asthma, nerve sedation, and in skincare. Blue tansy is also an analgesic, meaning that it relieves pain. Blue tansy may also lower blood pressure. This may be because it relieves tension and pain that lead to heightened blood pressure.

We put Deep Blue on our dog after a long hike or run. It helps relieve his sore muscles and he is sleeping in no time. My mom uses it on her hands to sooth them from the effects of arthritis and my partner and I both use it to relieve sore muscles and back pain.

My favorite of the blue tansy blends is balance though. Balance helps me to achieve a feeling of composure and emotional grounding. The blue tansy in it helps to cleanse the liver and calm the lymphatic system. I have sensitive nerves so I can tell a big difference when I use Balance. I am not so jumpy and I respond to things in a more even and relaxed way. Like Deep Blue, it is very good for bones and muscles as well. Apply 2-3 drops on your spine for comfort. Using this oil on your feet on reflex points is also very beneficial. To balance your right and left brain hemispheres, you can apply to fingertips and tub into temples. Balance can also be worn as a perfume or diffused for aromatherapy benefits. I have a diffuser necklace that is similar to a locket that allows me to enjoy essential oil benefits for several hours throughout the day. I just drop a few drops on a tiny cotton ball and clasp it shut.

Cardamom, the Queen of Spices.

Cardamom

Botanical Family: Zingiberaceae (ginger)
Extraction Method: Steam distilled from seeds

Cardamom is a spice made from the seeds of a plant native to India. In India the spice is often referred to as the "Queen of Spices". It is one of the world's most expensive spices. When you experience the benefits of the oil you will know why. Cardamom is used as a flavoring in cooking as well as a medicine. Green cardamom is often used in traditional Indian sweets and in masala chai(spiced tea). It is also used to neutralize bad breath, specifically after eating garlic.

Some of the ancient medicinal uses for cardamom include treating epilepsy, seizures, rheumatism (circulation), cardiac disorders, and digestive problems. Today the cardamom essential oil is used for coughs, respiratory ailments, inflammation, muscle aches, nausea, and headaches. Cardamom is also now included in the Breathe blend (respiratory blend).

Cardamom can be inhaled by dropping a few drops into your hands and cupping them as you inhale. Another great way to use cardamom is by diffusing it to make your house smell great while enjoying the health benefits. To make your breath smell fresh, drop 1-3 drops in a glass of water and drink before a date or a business meeting. It can also be used in cooking by dropping a drop or two into your dish while preparing it. It is served in some curry sauces, cinnamon rolls and coffee cake, spiced lentil soup, as well as holiday drinks like eggnog and chai.

I personally like to put cardamom in my coffee in the morning. It tastes good and it improves breathing and circulation. What better way to start your day.
