Blue Tansy, Roman Chamomile and the Blue Oils

The Blue Oils
One thing that boggled my mind recently was the difference between blue tansy and tansy. It was apparent to me that they were not at all the same plant. Once I started researching it, I learned that it gets even more confusing. Blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) is also often referred to as blue Moroccan chamomile. But Moroccan chamomile (Ormenis multicaulis) is something totally different than blue Moroccan chamomile. Blue tansy is an herb that produces blue oil. Some of the other oils that are blue include German chamomile (Matricaria recutica), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), and yarrow(Achillea millefolium). All of these oils are closely related as they are from the Asteraceae plant family.

So why blue tansy? It is in some of the blends we love such as Deep Blue (soothing blend) and Balance (grounding blend). We use Deep Blue for bruising, sore muscles, arthritis, headaches, inflammation and fibromyalgia so it only makes sense that it includes blue tansy that aides in rheumatism, inflammation, sciatica, asthma, nerve sedation, and in skincare. Blue tansy is also an analgesic, meaning that it relieves pain. Blue tansy may also lower blood pressure. This may be because it relieves tension and pain that lead to heightened blood pressure.

We put Deep Blue on our dog after a long hike or run. It helps relieve his sore muscles and he is sleeping in no time. My mom uses it on her hands to sooth them from the effects of arthritis and my partner and I both use it to relieve sore muscles and back pain.

My favorite of the blue tansy blends is balance though. Balance helps me to achieve a feeling of composure and emotional grounding. The blue tansy in it helps to cleanse the liver and calm the lymphatic system. I have sensitive nerves so I can tell a big difference when I use Balance. I am not so jumpy and I respond to things in a more even and relaxed way. Like Deep Blue, it is very good for bones and muscles as well. Apply 2-3 drops on your spine for comfort. Using this oil on your feet on reflex points is also very beneficial. To balance your right and left brain hemispheres, you can apply to fingertips and tub into temples. Balance can also be worn as a perfume or diffused for aromatherapy benefits. I have a diffuser necklace that is similar to a locket that allows me to enjoy essential oil benefits for several hours throughout the day. I just drop a few drops on a tiny cotton ball and clasp it shut.

Cardamom, the Queen of Spices.

Cardamom

Botanical Family: Zingiberaceae (ginger)
Extraction Method: Steam distilled from seeds

Cardamom is a spice made from the seeds of a plant native to India. In India the spice is often referred to as the "Queen of Spices". It is one of the world's most expensive spices. When you experience the benefits of the oil you will know why. Cardamom is used as a flavoring in cooking as well as a medicine. Green cardamom is often used in traditional Indian sweets and in masala chai(spiced tea). It is also used to neutralize bad breath, specifically after eating garlic.

Some of the ancient medicinal uses for cardamom include treating epilepsy, seizures, rheumatism (circulation), cardiac disorders, and digestive problems. Today the cardamom essential oil is used for coughs, respiratory ailments, inflammation, muscle aches, nausea, and headaches. Cardamom is also now included in the Breathe blend (respiratory blend).

Cardamom can be inhaled by dropping a few drops into your hands and cupping them as you inhale. Another great way to use cardamom is by diffusing it to make your house smell great while enjoying the health benefits. To make your breath smell fresh, drop 1-3 drops in a glass of water and drink before a date or a business meeting. It can also be used in cooking by dropping a drop or two into your dish while preparing it. It is served in some curry sauces, cinnamon rolls and coffee cake, spiced lentil soup, as well as holiday drinks like eggnog and chai.

I personally like to put cardamom in my coffee in the morning. It tastes good and it improves breathing and circulation. What better way to start your day.

Essential oils for Pregnancy and beyond

Essential oils can be very useful during pregnancy and for your infant. It is very important to dilute them with olive oil or coconut oil as many of them can be very potent. The best way to use oils while pregnant is by diffusing them. Not all oils are advisable during pregnancy, make sure they are safe for pregnant women and babies before using them. Using 100% pure therapeutic grade oils will ensure that they are chemical free and non-toxic to your skin. You can also make your own blends to use for specific purposes. Ask me how you can learn more about oil uses.

Clary Sage is known for regulation of hormones and emotions. It can also be used for calming and relaxing. Once you are pregnant you should discontinue use, as Clary Sage can cause premature contractions.

Clary Calm (monthly women's blend) Clary Calm has been reported to have reduced symptoms of PMS as well as menopause while balancing hormones. This is a very good blend for women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), as it has shown to regulate menstrual periods and minimize the effects of it.  Using this oil may increase the likelihood of getting pregnant.

Lavender has many purposes. It can be used to calm nausea during the morning sickness phase. It can also be used to alleviate nipple soreness. During labor it can be used for relaxation. It has also been used to stop contractions and prevent early labor. I made a blend of lemon, ginger and lavender to use to settle my stomach and make me feel more alive.

Frankincense: Rub on feet nightly to help overall well being. Frankincense is the most useful of all the oils. It helps almost everything.

Balance (grounding blend): Helps to feel grounded, uplifted and balance mood.

Breathe (respiratory blend); Many women get congestion while pregnant. This is due to inflammation in the sinuses. Breathe respiratory blend can help clear your sinuses so you can breathe better.

Helichrysum can be used to prevent excessive hemorrhaging after a vaginal delivery. Apply 1-3 drops on lower back to help prevent hemorrhaging.

On Guard (Protective Blend): cleaning and disinfecting. Prevents colds and flu virus and supports immune system. I used this blend to make sure our house was nice and clean for the day we brought our baby home. You can use a concentrated On Guard cleaning product or you can make your own with a few drops of the oil in warm water. We also put it in the diffuser regularly to make our house smell like fall and keep the flu and cold viruses away. This blend has also been proven to kill MRSA. A must if you have little ones and work in the public.

Past Tense (Tension Blend); I got some pretty intense headaches while I was pregnant and this blend really helped to soothe them away. It comes in a roller ball bottle and I just rolled it on the back of my neck.
